It’s a question my work colleagues often ask me at this time of year. They automatically think that Lent is a time for abstinence. But Lent is a time of preparation – for reflection and sacrifice – before the rollercoaster of emotions we feel during Holy Week and the joy and celebration of Easter Sunday.
This Lent I’m doing the #40acts challenge , where instead of giving something up, I’m trying to do an act of generosity every day.
It works like this: every day throughout Lent (not including Sundays), I am emailed a suggested generosity challenge around a theme. There’s a choice between three challenge levels. (5 minute, 15 minute or something more challenging!!) My favourite is ‘chocolate Tuesday’ where we are encouraged to buy some chocolate for anyone you feel may need some!
The website also provides a daily reflection which I find helpful to see the ‘acts’ in context. It’s a sacrifice in a different way. As you engage with different social projects and people, you give your time, you spend some money and you go out of your comfort zone. It’s a great way to prepare for Good Friday when we reflect on Jesus’ ultimate sacrifice.
It’s not too late to take part. The website is https://40acts.org.uk/ Sign up to their daily email to see what your next challenge could be!
