Image for Old Testament | Stepping Out in Faith

Life-Changing Examples from the History of Israel. This is the second part of our series giving us an overview of the whole of the Old Testament. In Autumn of last year we looked together at Genesis to Deuteronomy. We moved from creation to considering God’s law. In this section we will be taking a closer look at topics like faith, holy war and listening to God. We will also be focusing on the troubled times outlined in the Book of Judges and learning from the tragic mistakes Saul made. Finally we will discover where Jesus can be found in the Old Testament.

Part 1: Joshua: The Law of the First Step

by Mike Hall January 12, 2020 6:30pm

Joshua 1:1-11 & 3:13-17

If we are going to follow God, we will have to live by faith. There is no other way. To walk with God is to walk in faith. Israel had to learn this over and over again and so do we. In the book of Joshua God’s people were called to take huge steps of faith. They learnt to obey even when it seemed to make no sense. Sometimes God waits to act until we begin to move in faith. Then God reveals his power and presence. When we refuse to take that first step we can miss the faith-building experience of seeing God at work.

Part 2: Joshua: The Old Testament and Holy War

by Chris Mellor January 19, 2020 6:30pm

Deuteronomy 7:1-16 & Joshua 6:20-21

Facing the reality of warfare in the Old Testament head-on. We cannot study the OT and with integrity sidestep this topic. There are no quick and easy answers but we must seek to understand why God called the people of Israel to war, with all its brutality and pain.

Part 3: Judges: A Vicious Cycle

by Chris Mellor January 26, 2020 6:30pm

Genesis 12:1-3 & Judges 2:6-19

God had promised to Abraham that he would make his descendants into a mighty nation and give them a land of their own. The book of Judges is set at a time when these two promises have been wonderfully fulfilled. It should have been a golden era when the people follow God and seek him only. Sadly, a deadly cycle begins that is repeated twelve times. What can we learn from this sad state of affairs?

Part 4: Samuel: Learning to Listen to God

by Tom Ward February 9, 2020 6:30pm

1 Samuel 3:1-18

Prayer has always been seen as a central element of the Christian life. The story of Samuel gives us insight to prayer on many levels. Through his life we learn about listening to God and learning to recognize his voice. In this message we learn how to grow more intimate with our Father God through a growing life of prayer.

Part 5: Saul: Where is Your Confidence

by Chris Mellor February 16, 2020 6:30pm

1 Samuel 8:1-9

This message considers the example of Saul. We will be reflecting on his life not because he is worthy of emulation, but because we can learn from his many mistakes. God calls us to place our confidence in him, but Saul placed his everywhere and anywhere but in him.

Part 6: Finding Jesus in the Old Testament

by Eddy Inglis February 23, 2020 6:30pm

We find that Jesus is present right through the Old Testament. God the Father wanted the world to know that his Son, the Messiah, would be coming to earth. All through the OT we get glimpses of what the anointed Saviour will look like. His character is revealed and his mission begins to take shape. Hope grows in the hearts of those awaiting the coming Saviour. We are considering some of the OT passages that get us ready to see Jesus.
