In this series we are looking at the topic of money. It is a subject we all find hard to talk about but amazingly Jesus spoke about money more frequently than any other subject except the kingdom of God. Our study follows outlines from Richard Foster’s brilliant book, ‘Money, Sex and Power’. We are considering the negative and positive sides to money. We are thinking about how money, with all its power to do evil, can best be used in God’s Kingdom. We are reflecting on the simplicity that Jesus calls us to.

Matthew 19:16-26

Satan loves to use money to draw us away from God. When we ignore money’s darker side it leads to a couple of major distortions which we must be aware of. In this message we are considering how we can protect ourselves from the negative side of money.

Luke 8:2-3, Acts 4:37-38

Alongside the bible’s warnings about the dark side of money there are also many passages that speak of it in a far more positive side. In this tradition money is seen as a blessing from God and even able to enhance our relationship with God. God gives us all we have and ultimately owns everything. We surrender to him only what he has already given to us. When we give generously it brings great blessing into our lives. When we manage money as God intends it can be used for the good of all and for the glory of God.

In this sermon we are considering Jesus’ parable about the shrewd manager to see how we can take money, with all its potential for evil, and subdue it for greater goals. Money is not to be served but used in positive ways.
