Image for Old Testament | Creating a New Community

Looking at the Old Testament from Genesis through to Deuteronomy, God is working through his people to bring them together in community. We look at how we as human beings long to be together in community, and how although God plays his part, sometimes best of plans go bad and God continues to reach out to us and draw us back to him.

Genesis 1:1-4, Ecclesiastes 4:8-12, John 1:1-5 & 14

All of us, whatever age, have a hunger for community. We do not want to be alone and we long to love and be loved. We all want a place where we can be accepted and belong. God who exists in eternal community as Father, Son and Holy Spirit, invites us into the beauty and wonder of fellowship with him. He also enables us to connect heart-to-heart with each other. This journey towards authentic community begins in the first verses of Genesis. Our deep longing for community can only be met when we follow God’s plan.

Genesis 3:1-24

God wanted human beings to live in harmonious and loving relationship with him and each other. God certainly did his part. However, sometimes the best of plans go bad. In Genesis 3-11 we see the downward spiral of sin. Sin goes deep and spreads wider. In this section of the Bible we are forced to face the reality of our own sinfulness but we are also reminded of the depths of God’s grace for us.
