Image for Old Testament | Creating a New Community

Looking at the Old Testament from Genesis through to Deuteronomy, God is working through his people to bring them together in community. We look at how we as human beings long to be together in community, and how although God plays his part, sometimes best of plans go bad and God continues to reach out to us and draw us back to him.

by Marjike Hoeke September 1, 2019 6:30pm

Genesis 1:1-4, Ecclesiastes 4:8-12, John 1:1-5 & 14

All of us, whatever age, have a hunger for community. We do not want to be alone and we long to love and be loved. We all want a place where we can be accepted and belong. God who exists in eternal community as Father, Son and Holy Spirit, invites us into the beauty and wonder of fellowship with him. He also enables us to connect heart-to-heart with each other. This journey towards authentic community begins in the first verses of Genesis. Our deep longing for community can only be met when we follow God’s plan.

Genesis 3:1-24

God wanted human beings to live in harmonious and loving relationship with him and each other. God certainly did his part. However, sometimes the best of plans go bad. In Genesis 3-11 we see the downward spiral of sin. Sin goes deep and spreads wider. In this section of the Bible we are forced to face the reality of our own sinfulness but we are also reminded of the depths of God’s grace for us.

by Tom Ward September 15, 2019 6:30pm

Genesis 15

When a man and woman are dating there always comes a point where they have to sit down and ask the big questions like, “Where are we going?, What are we doing here?, What comes next in this relationship?, Is this the one for me?”. Abraham discovered such moments happen with God all through life if we are paying attention and ready to respond. God keeps inviting us, like Abraham, to keep taking steps of faith as we walk with him. He wants to take us to a new place of intimacy, a new level of commitment , and a deeper place of community.

Genesis 24:1-58

Even the most extroverted amongst us can testify to the fact that there are times when we all feel alone. However, God is with us no matter what we might feel about our human relationships. Throughout the book of Genesis God is constantly reminding His people of His presence and care for them. Even at the lowest moments they are reminded that God is with them.

by Jonny Stanfield September 29, 2019 6:30pm

Exodus 2:23-25, 3:9-10 & 12:50-51

All of us face moments when we need the help of others. We can either humbly accept it or stubbornly try to get by on our own. Life goes so much better when we can admit we need help. There are times when we all need a deliverer. In the early chapters of Exodus we see that the people of Israel needed a deliverer. We discover that God has the power to save and enjoys delivering his children. As we look at this section we will discover how we can walk in the delivering power of God.

Part 6: God the Lawgiver

by Tom Ward October 6, 2019 6:30pm

Exodus 20

God is perfectly holy and we are not. We are desperately seeking to grow in holiness! How can impure people like us learn to walk in holiness? The answer to this question is that we walk with a God who is holy, and He transforms us. God cleanses us by His power and grace and He teaches us how to become more like Him as we walk in His ways. The people of Israel learnt that growing in holiness is a process that takes a lifetime.

Part 7: Lessons From the Wilderness

by Chris Mellor October 13, 2019 6:30pm

Deuteronomy 8:1-20

The wisest people learn from the example of others. We can learn what paths to take and what to avoid. As we consider the example of the Israelites in the wilderness we learn from their victories and their failures. We need to grow in wisdom as we learn from those who have gone before us.

Part 8: The House of God

by Mavic Quiazon October 20, 2019 6:30pm

Exodus 25:1-8 & 22

We can learn a lot about people from their homes. In this message we will look at the house of God. In the first five books of the Bible (the Pentateuch) we learn about God’s choice to live among his people. His dwelling place, the tabernacle, gives us amazing insight into the heart of God and how he relates with His children.

Part 9: Set Apart for Joy

by Eddy Inglis October 27, 2019 6:30pm

Deuteronomy 16:1-21

We have been created by God to seek joy. However, we live in the world that wants us to fall in love with all sorts of things. It might be new product, new hobbies or new forms of entertainment. Above these voices God calls us to love His Law and to choose Him above all other things because in Him is our true joy.
