If you were at Elmwood on Sunday morning, 23 June, then you will have shared in a wonderful baptism service, where four people declared publicly that Jesus Christ is their Lord and Saviour.

When Chris spoke to the children, you will have heard him say that sin gets between us God sent His son, Jesus, to pay the penalty on our behalf by dying for us. This means that everything we have ever done or thought that was wrong has been forgiven if we trust in the sacrifice that Jesus made.

In fact the Bible says, “As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions (sins) from us.” (Psalm 103 v12)

Now I’m sure that those of us who are Christians, having accepted Jesus as our Saviour, believe in theory what Chris said about God’s amazing free gift of forgiveness for sins. But do we keep looking back, feeling guilty about what we have done, not really accepting that forgiveness?

If that’s true for you, I recommend that you listen to Rend Collective’s “Nailed to the Cross”, or just read the lyrics. Here are a few lines:

“When I stand accused by my regrets, And the devil roars his empty threats, I will preach the gospel to myself, That I am not a man condemned, For Jesus Christ is my defence.”

I love the idea of “… preaching the gospel to myself…”.
