How do you feel about squirrels? Fluffy cuddly creatures? I once heard them described as rats, but with good public relations.
I’m afraid my wife and I have rather fallen out with squirrels. They ravage our vegetable patch, destroying our peas and strawberry plants as they burrow away, hiding their nuts in the soil of our planters. Squirrels are experts at hiding things away in the ground. In fact, they even gave rise to the expression “squirrelled away”.
Are we sometimes a bit like squirrels? Jesus told the story of a squirrel-like servant who buried his master’s money in the ground. Do we bury our precious God-given talents, gifts, money and time? Or do we invest them to bless others and build God’s kingdom? Will we be known to Jesus as “unprofitable” or “good and faithful”?
“Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things. I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your Lord.” (Matthew 25:23)
