Image for Life Verses

God, in his kindness, often provides a verse or passage from the Bible to help guide or encourage those who call him Lord (and sometimes to challenge them.) In 'Life Verses' we explore the passages that have captured the imagination of a variety of Elmwood people and we'll hear their story - how God's word has impacted their day-to-day life - sometimes provoking significant changes of career or location; sometimes providing comfort when individuals face major struggles; or simply by becoming a watchword to live by and an anchor point to return to when life is most confusing.

Part 1: Treasures in Heaven

by Tony Cunliffe January 5, 2014 6:30pm

Do you know what heaven is going to be like? Does the thought of going to heaven excite you? Is building your treasures in heaven important to you?

Part 2: What is God calling you for?

by John Price January 12, 2014 6:30pm

Isaiah 6: 8

God is calling you to do something for him. The question is, what is he asking? God does speak to us through the scriptures, sometimes we understand immediately, other times we need to get the message a few times.

Part 3: The Two Prodigal Sons

by Craig Mairs January 26, 2014 6:30pm

Do we really understand the fulness or concept of grace? It's not something you can earn by being good but something you just need to accept and rejoice in. God loves us because he is our heavenly Father and he accepts us for what Jesus has done and not because of anything we can do.

Part 4: We can't live the Christian Life

by Heather Fowler February 16, 2014 6:30pm

Romans 8:28, Revelation 2:1-5

God doesn't promise us an easy life, he promises that we have trials, and some of these are because we are Christians but he promise to walk together with us. God can bring us a peace when the storms come, and they will, but we can trust that he is with us and there is a purpose. God can use them. When we give our lives to Christ we are given a new life, not an improved, upgraded life but a new life. We have to let Christ live through sand to do that we need to surrender our all to him.

Part 5: Building to last in an earthquake zone

by Jill Reynolds February 23, 2014 6:30pm

Joel 2: 25-27

Only God can make a miracle from a disaster. Our past helps us to handle our future, it can be a blessing to ourselves and others. Our past is not a source of shame but a glory to God because he loves complete overhauls and likes long odds. God doesn't just concern himself with our future but with our past because he wants to glorify himself through all things. Nothing is wasted.

Part 6: What is God leading me in to?

by David Fowler March 2, 2014 6:30pm

Psalm 139, Philippians 2:12-16

Where can I flee from your presence? God has gone before us, God comes after us. Life isn't easy but we need to recognise that God is in control of the circumstances of our lives. The fact that life can be hard doesn't give us a mandate to give up.

Part 7: God's Plan (Not My Plan!)

by Martin Kelly March 9, 2014 6:30pm

Jeremiah 29: 11

How many of us have had a plan for our lives only to find out it is not where God wants us to be? So often we see our plans as being great but God has plans for our lives which are so much better than we could ever imagine and we find ourselves somewhere we didn't expect but somewhere where we want to be.

Part 8: More than the God of my fathers

by Rowena Balmeo & Mavic Quiazon March 16, 2014 6:30pm

Hebrews 13: 15, Isaiah 6: 5

Life is not easy, sometimes you find yourself at the top of the mountain, at other times you experience a real low. Yet through it all we need to through him offer a sacrifice of praise to God. God wants to take the words of the bible and make himself real to us. God transcends rational thought. Embrace a personal God, not a religion or a church but a real God.

Part 9: I want to know Christ

by Mike Hall March 23, 2014 6:30pm

Philippians 3: 10

God does not comfort us to make us comfortable but to make us comforters. How can we become a fellowship that shares in the sufferings of each other? What can we do to make ourselves available to give a message of hope, of life, to those who are in the greatest despair?

Part 10: Convinced!

by Elizabeth Gough March 30, 2014 6:30pm

Romans 8: 38-39

Does God cause bad things to happen? It is actually irrelevant if God causes things to happen or allows them to happen. Give thanks to God for everything. He made the world and the laws that govern it, including the consequences of the decisions and choices that we make. Nothing surprises him, he is aware of our every mistake, every error in judgement, disobedience and rebellion, both past, present and future and he can turn them all to our ultimate good when we seek his way.

Part 11: Silence

by Helen White April 6, 2014 6:30pm

Job 2: 11-13

The gospel message is so important but we need to learn to deliver it in a language and way that people can understand. Sometimes it is better not to speak but to show people who God is. Sometimes we need to be reminded of who God is and not what we think God thinks of us. Let us all be living parables to a world full of words. Helen suffers with cerebral palsy and acknowledges that you may find it difficult to understand her. Please download the accompanying pdf of her talk.

Part 12: I am the good shepherd

by Tom & Betty Bennett April 13, 2014 6:30pm

Habakkuk 2: 3

God is faithful. We sometimes just need to wait for God's timing and trust in him.

Part 13: Beginning where you are

by Rob Whittaker April 27, 2014 6:30pm

Ephesians 3: 17-18

Can we always be right just because we have read and studied the bible? Maybe we are not always right? Could it be that sometimes we could be seriously wrong about something? Could it be that God likes something that we don't?

Part 14: Fight the Good Fight, Finish the Race

by Phil Gee May 4, 2014 6:30pm

2 Timothy 4: 7-8

Why should we keep fighting, keep running the race? Because it's a race worth finishing. Because of Jesus, knowing him as saviour.

Part 15: Trust in the Lord

by Helen Patterson May 11, 2014 6:30pm

Proverbs 3: 5-6

Many of us are worriers and doubters. We see so many bad things in the world around us. Why does God allow these things to happen? Why do people suffer? Do not lean on your own understandings but trust in the Lord.

Part 16: He is always faithful

by Julian Gittings May 18, 2014 6:30pm

2 Timothy 2: 13

Looking back on our lives we can probably all see many instances where we can see God's hand upon our lives and how he faithfully kept us and helped us in so many ways. No matter what we have done, no matter where we go, God is and always shall be faithful.

Part 17: Applying the Bible in your life

by Becky Kelly May 25, 2014 6:30pm

John 14: 6

Knowing, loving and following Jesus's teachings can be hard on your life, relationships with family and friends and can cause a lot of trouble and great concern. How we apply bible knowledge is a fine balance between being accurate and correct and being thoughtful and appropriate. What must people think about Christianity through our actions? Do we make it appealing or do we convey an exclusive club to which that are not welcome?

Part 18: God's love never fails

by Christine Barker June 8, 2014 6:30pm

Matthew 11: 28-30

Part 19: God Provides

Part 20: Lain on my Heart

by Christian Lumor March 22, 2015 6:30pm

Rev 22: 13, Hebrews 12: 2, Psalm 27: 4

Part 21: Trusting God in Times of Uncertainty

by Becky Kelly March 29, 2015 6:30pm

Matthew 6: 25-34, Proverbs 3: 5-6

Part 22: Don't Worry!

by Maureen Williams April 12, 2015 6:30pm

Philippians 4: 5-8

Part 23: Pray properly; Think properly; Live properly

by Andy Williams April 26, 2015 6:30pm

Philippians 4: 6-9

Part 24: Yet I am always with you

Part 25: You're thoughts matter

Part 26: You're not in the driving seat

by Gill Nowland November 8, 2015 6:30pm
