Those who know me know that I love the idea of a bargain or a special offer and, at this time of year, they are everywhere. Even more appealing is the idea of a free gift. Except that free gifts usually have a catch – you have to ‘earn’ them by doing something or committing to something before you get the gift, which often isn’t worth very much. Well that’s not true for the best free gift in the world.

Paul writes:
“For it is by grace you have been saved through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no-one can boast.”
Ephesians chapter 2 verse 8

God’s free gift for everyone is that we can be saved from the consequences of our sinfulness and have peace with Him by believing that Jesus, God’s Son, died in our place and rose again. The amazing truth is that we don’t have to do anything to earn this gift, just accept it. So if you’ve never accepted the free gift, what’s stopping you?  If you have questions, why not come along to the Whole Church Alpha, starting at the end of January?

If you have accepted the free gift, are you trying to live a ‘good’ life to show God and other people that you deserve it? If so, maybe you’ve missed the point. None of us can live a good life – only Jesus. But the great news is that the free gift includes God’s Holy Spirit, given to us to live Jesus’ life in us. If that doesn’t seem to be a reality in your life, then you too can find out more by joining in Alpha. Of course, if you don’t want to wait for Alpha to have your questions answered, speak to a member of Elmwood’s Leadership Team or someone you trust to be able to help you.

At the start of 2018 let’s commit to finding answers to life’s big questions.
